It’s not that much about what the people will do with the money, it’s much more about what the money will do to the people. Even just the fact of getting money from patrons on a regular basis is a huge encouragement to keep working on your ideas and feels like a monthly energiser.

This is also underpinned by Michael Bohmeyer, the founder of the Mein Grundeinkommen association. His experience shows that “after a year of getting a basic income I am facing self-confident, reflecting and healthy people who treat others considerately and who want and have energy to develop and set up something meaningful. People transform this trust into self-confidence. They work with more motivation and are less stressed, they live healthier, continue educating themselves and are able to work with drive.”

We support people, not projects. Our purpose is to ensure a long-term financial support in order to enable sustainable realization of innovative ideas for our common good.

This is done by means of standing orders. So, the funding target is the money someone needs additionally per month in order to quit a job and dedicate him- or herself to social impact. Like on other crowdfunding platforms, but without project and therefore funding deadline. The more additional income is generated with PATRON4change, the more employment hours can be cut. At the end it should even be possible to quit a job and dedicate oneself to social and ecological impact completely.

Our purpose is not to make profit, but to invest the money we charge as a commission fee into the platform maintenance and the people who help us to do it. This is a classic non-profit approach. But before we come to this point 100% of the work will be done on a volunteer basis.

Commissions make it possible for us to become independent, scalable and efficient. They will also cover the costs of platform operations, contributions transaction settlement and supporting collaboration between changemakers and patrons. In addition to this they cover the costs for money transactions of our external partner Stripe. More details here.

Stripe charges 0,25 Euro per transaction plus percentage of original 100% contribution depending on a credit card: it makes 1,2% with Visa- and MasterCard and 2,9% with all AMEX Cards, such as non- EU Visa and MasterCards. Normally the costs are higher, but we have a special social tariff.

PATRON4change is a non-profit project. That means that we only need funds to cover our costs and we do not make profit. We will disclose the information regarding the cash flow as soon as we have it. Transparency is one of our key principles.

Tax liability for obtained voluntary contributions is generally the case only when those contributions are made in exchange for completed services provision by a changemaker. In most of the cases it will not be the case, especially if a contribution is serving the purposes of covering the costs of recreational activities of a changemaker. If the contribution was regarded as services exchange, then it would be subject to certain tax allowances (for example income tax: EUR 11 000 per year for all taxable incomes, VAT: EUR 30 000 per year for all revenues; version of march 2018). It is recommended to get professional advice for tax-related matters.

Trust instead of performance indicators.

Those who challenge themselves in the interests of all of us deserve our respect and much more: our trust. With a little monthly contribution, we can make it possible for them to do the right thing. These are the people who initiate vital changes for us and we can give them our trust before they are able to demonstrate figures in respect of certain delivered services. They can still keep us up to date with their reports regarding progress of their missions.

Exactly now we need a new way of thinking, because the old way of thinking brought us to the verge of the abyss. That is why with PATRON4change we are consciously breaking the ranks and deliver a pioneer work. As we positioning ourselves against the predominant business logic, we are not making any money with PATRON4change (yet) and will not make us rich.
